ICT, digital literacy skills and Computer Science are of prime importance in the rapidly advancing global society that we live in. The Computing curriculum has to evolve and adapt constantly, due to the ever changing nature and use of technology in society.

Recently, more emphasis has been placed on developing the programming skills of pupils and having an understanding of how computers actually work. The latest curriculum changes at Wigston address this issue.

Each pupil has one discrete lesson of Computing per week. Each pupil uses their own PC in lessons. There is also a 10 week block of digital media lessons for each KS3 pupil. This provides an experience that surpasses most other schools.

Students are allowed to use the IT rooms at lunch-time for school-work related activities as along as they ask a member of staff from Computing. There is an IT club after-school on Thursdays – most students play Minecraft. There is a programming club on Friday lunch-times.

Wigston has three main IT suites. There are many laptops available for departments to use on the campus-wide wireless network. Every classroom is fitted with a whiteboard and projector.

The Internet connection that is provided at school is a filtered level service for education.

Proposed Learning Map for Computing lessons in 2014-2015

Year 7

7.1 Graphics Students learn about bitmap and vector images and use Adobe Fireworks and Photoshop to create logos and composite images, with a movie poster theme.
7.2 Introduction to Computing Students learn about different types of computer and robots. Then they learn to program using the Scratch software tool.
7.3 E-safety Students learn about the issues and dangers associated with E-safety.
7.4 Harry Plotter Spreadsheet Modelling unit with Excel – covers tables, charts, formatting and formulae such as MAX, MIN, SUM, AVERAGE and cell linking.
7.5 Superheroes Introduces the concept of working with an Access database, using tables, forms and queries.

Year 8

8.1 Amazing HTML Using simple HTML code and Notepad to create basic web-pages – covers simple tags like col, p, u, I, b, table, img, a href, title, head, body, font.
8.2 MissionMaker Students learn how to use the MissionMaker software program to create a 3D FPS type game.
8.3 SmallBasic Programming Learning how to program with Microsoft SmallBasic – covers text, variables, FOR loops, WHILE loops, IF statements and 2D graphics.
8.4 Understanding Computers A computer science topic about computer hardware and software covering the CPU, binary, binary addition, ASCII, storage devices and thinking about future technologies.

Year 9

9.1 Grand Designs Project about managing housing development:- project planning tools, 3D SketchUp house design, finance spreadsheets with Excel, automatic house control with Flowol, web-site design with Serif WebPlus.
9.2 SmallBasic Further Programming Building on knowledge from Year 8 to develop programs to meet required solutions.
9.3 Game Design Looking at the concept of games design (different types of game). Planning a simple platform or shoot ’em-up game. Designing the game with the Multimedia Fusion 2 software environment or GameSalad (TBC).
9.4 Computer Science Internet technologies, IP addressing, packet switching, transmission speeds, networks, binary encoding for image storing, logic gates and sound representation on a computer.
