Enrichment at Wigston Academy

At Wigston Academy and Wigston College, we offer more than a good academic curriculum. Students are introduced to new experiences through a range of exciting enrichment activities, which develop new interests and support the development of transferable skills helping them in all aspects of their lives, as well as their studies. Activities encourage students to be empowered learners; keen to learn beyond the classroom and throughout their lives, as well as to have confidence in themselves as they live in, and contribute to, the modern world

Recent Ofsted inspections have identified our enrichment opportunities as an area of strength across the Trust.

Pupils value the wide range of activities available to them. They can pursue interests or develop talents in sport, music, dance, yoga and STEM club… Pupils spoke about how these opportunities have given them confidence, resilience, and a sense of responsibility. (Wigston Academy Ofsted Report, 2022)

Students benefit from a strong programme of personal development. Staff provide a range of opportunities to develop students’ interests. These experiences help students to develop resilience and confidence. (Wigston College Ofsted Report, 2022)

During January, we will be considering the theme of challenging Prejudice and Persecution across the Trust, as we build towards recognising Holocaust Memorial Day at the end of the month. Students will be learning about this during assemblies, History lessons and through activities in a variety of subjects. This is part of our ongoing commitment to raising awareness of the causes and impact of discrimination, building a community that places tolerance and respect at the centre of it.

The Trust has launched a series of lectures delivered by staff aimed at providing students the opportunity to learn about a range of different areas of study that are not a part of their courses, as well as experience this aspect of university life. This began with a talk on the James Bond films last term, and this half-term students will be able to find out about Animé, the Galàpagos Islands and William Flint. This is open to all college students.

There is a busy period of fixtures ahead for our sports teams, including badminton matches, a Rugby competition, and several events for year 10 sports leaders, in addition to football and netball matches. Teams will be competing against neighbouring schools in Oadby and Wigston Leagues, but we still have teams progressing through regional and national cups. We are also very excited that we will have students participating in indoor cricket matches for the first time as a Trust.

Competition extends to Mathematicians training to compete in the Intermediate Mathematics Challenge at the end of this month. The ability of students to use logic and problem solve will be put to the test, and we wish all of our teams the best of luck.

A large cast of performers, supported by a backstage crew, have begun rehearsals for this year’s show ‘The Wizard of Oz’ and will continue to dedicate their time to preparing for multiple performances in March. There is already a buzz around the Trust in anticipation for what promises to be another fantastic show.

This brochure outlines enrichment opportunities available to students during January and February 2023, but as this this is an evolving programme, new opportunities will be offered through tutor times, assemblies, and our on-line platforms, including the school app, website and our twitter feeds.
